How long water keeps in a bottle, a container and a carafe, how much of a supply makes sense and how to store tap water safely for emergencies.
In short
- Recommendation of the German Federal Office for Civil Protection: 2 litres per person per day, for 10 days.
- Unopened mineral water in glass keeps practically indefinitely, in PET about one to two years.
- Tap water in clean containers, stored cool and dark, keeps for about six months.
- Empty opened bottles and carafes within one to two days.
How much of a supply makes sense
The German Federal Office for Civil Protection (Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz) recommends a water supply of 2 litres per person per day for ten days, so 20 litres per person. Part of this is for drinking, part for cooking. If you have pets, include them. The supply is not for the end of the world, but for a burst pipe in your town, a power cut at the waterworks or a contamination that leads to a boil-water notice.
How long water keeps
| Water | Unopened | Opened |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral water in glass | practically unlimited (best-before date usually 2 years) | 2 to 3 days, cool |
| Mineral water in PET | 1 to 2 years, after that it takes on a taste from the bottle | 1 to 2 days, cool |
| Tap water in a container | about 6 months, cool and dark | within a day |
| Carafe on the table | up to 24 hours | the same day |
| Filtered water | 1 day in the fridge | straight away |
Water does not “go off” like milk. It takes on taste from the container, loses carbonation and can pick up germs if light and warmth are added. A best-before date is a formality on glass and, on PET, a hint about the taste.
Storing tap water properly
- Use food-grade containers, not old cleaning-product containers.
- Clean the container with hot water and a little washing-up liquid, then rinse thoroughly.
- Fill it to the brim with cold water that has run for a minute or two, with no air left in.
- Store it cool, dark and frost-free: cellar, pantry, utility room.
- Write the date on it and replace the water after six months. The old water is good for watering plants and cleaning.
Water in the car and on hikes
PET bottles in a hot car release more substances from the plastic, and the water tastes of the bottle. This is not dangerous, but it is unpleasant. For on the go, a stainless steel or glass bottle is better, see Choosing a reusable water bottle.
When water gets scarce
Under a boil-water notice, boil first, then let the water cool and keep it in clean containers. When boiling is necessary and for how long is covered in the article When should you boil water?

Can I fill tap water into PET bottles?
For a few weeks yes, if the bottles are clean and stored in the dark. For months, HDPE containers or glass demijohns are better.
How do I store sparkling water?
Cool; whether lying or standing does not matter. Once opened, the carbonation escapes within a day, even with the cap on.
