Spanish tap water is drinkable everywhere, but it tastes completely different depending on the region: Madrid has soft mountain water, Barcelona and the coast have hard, chlorinated water, and the Canary Islands drink desalinated seawater.
The short answer
Yes, safe for health; on the coast the taste is often chlorinated
Aquaviana’s advice
- Madrid: drink from the tap, the water from the Sierra is considered one of the best in Spain.
- Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Mallorca: drinkable, but much more pleasant chilled or filtered.
- Since 2022, restaurants must serve tap water free of charge on request, “agua del grifo”.
Madrid versus the coast
Madrid draws its water from reservoirs in the Sierra de Guadarrama: soft (3 to 5 °dH), neutral, excellent. Barcelona mixes water from the Ter and the Llobregat, which is hard and, because of the longer distances, more heavily chlorinated, and in dry years desalinated seawater is added. Valencia, Alicante, Murcia and the Balearics sit on limestone and have water of 20 to 40 °dH, which can taste chalky and slightly salty. From a health point of view all of it is fine.
The Canary Islands and the Balearics
The Canary Islands obtain a large part of their water from seawater desalination. It is drinkable, but soft and empty in taste, and many locals drink bottled water from the 5-litre containers that are sold cheaply everywhere. In Mallorca the groundwater is partly salty (chloride) because of overuse. In Palma it is mixed and treated, and in some coastal villages you can taste the sea.
In restaurants
A law from 2022 obliges hospitality businesses to offer tap water free of charge if guests ask for it. In practice bottled water is usually brought automatically, but “agua del grifo, por favor” works almost everywhere.
What makes sense
A table filter with activated carbon removes chlorine and the limescale taste, and a soda maker turns coastal water into a proper drink. If you stay longer, an under-sink filter saves money compared with the containers, see Filter comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Why do so many Spaniards buy 8-litre containers?
Out of habit and for the taste, not out of necessity. In hard water regions, container water for coffee and for children is common, in Madrid hardly at all.
